  • Covered moving expenses.
  • Existing mortgage payments until your house gets sold.
  • Closing costs paid on new home purchase.
  • Negotiable and competitive salaries.
  • Fully covered health insurance benefits and retirement.
SO DON'T WAIT GET THOSE APPLICATIONS IN TODAY AND BEGIN ENJOYING THE MANY BENEFITS FOR TEACHING AND LIVING IN NORTH CAROLINA.

While it is a pipe dream to even consider that a teacher in North Carolina would be treated this way, for some it happens.
Take Currituck County, a coastal community, which boasts an exploding school population of 3900 students.
Allison Sholar was "lured" from Pender County, NC, to the district to become the superintendent.  She was offered a salary of $134,000 a year including perks.  How about a house to live in rent free, including utilities and the district even agreed to fence in the back yard for her dogs!!  When she decided to move into another home she was given $1200 a month to cover this new expense.  According to Ms. Sholar, " I guess Currituck County was trying to be really creative with what they were offering, indicative of a family atmosphere and people looking out for each other."  No, those people on the school board had been drinking the magic punch and breathing way too much salt air.
Now I don't begrudge Ms. Sholar from getting a handsome salary, after all the United States works on the principle of capitalism.  But considering the fringe benefits she was offered any teacher in North Carolina should be insulted.
Want to know what the average teacher makes? $30,000 (1st year).  Which means for many they are living well below the median household income for the county, which heavily supports tourism, and probably can't afford to benefits of coastal living.
So what is the message here?  Well for those that feel strongly about improving teacher benefits in the state becoming involved in the election process.  Over the coming weeks I will begin posting the names of our elected representatives that have continue to vote against North Carolinas teachers getting higher salaries, benefits, and not rewarding them for getting advanced degrees.  The only way that North Carolina teachers pay and benefits will remain the lowest in the country is to continue to complain while showing up for work each day.   Apathy is contagious!!!

Data from Currituck County
Estimated median household income in 2009: $45,499
Estimated median house or condo value in 2009: $252,241
Percentage of residents living in poverty in 2009: 8.3%
